There’s many different ways to determine how to pick which stones or crystals to pair or group together. This is simply intended to give you some ideas for how to get started or things to consider as you work with your beauties.
Remember the crystals are here to support you as you do the work, not to do the work for you. But they serve as wonderful, tactile reminders as you’re focusing your intentions, and they’re great for amplifying your intentions and honing your focus.
Group by Single Chakra
One easy way to find pieces that might pair well is by choosing by chakra (Stones by Chakra (Energy Center)). If you’ve just had some heartbreak, you might choose a couple of heart-healing crystals that align with the heart chakra (like Rose Quartz and Cobalto Calcite). Or if you’re feeling unsafe or scared, a grounding stone from the root/base chakra might be a good pick (like Obsidian and Smoky Quartz).
To make things easy, I’ve created a list for you by chakra (Stones by Chakra (Energy Center)), and if you’re not finding a stone you’re looking for (I’m expanding our list all the time but there’s SO many to include), you can always do a quick search online.
Group by Multiple Chakras
Another way you can group pieces is by pulling from multiple chakras. So let’s say someone hurt you and you need to talk with them to share your truth, you might choose a heart chakra pieces and one from the throat chakra. So perhaps Garnierite and Orca Agate.
Again my Stones by Chakra (Energy Center) can help, and each chakra has a brief explanation to help you understand them a little better.
Grouping by Properties
Often you’ll find pieces within the same chakra hold similar properties, but also you sometimes find that in ones that aren’t (e.g. two stone in two different chakras may both be calming). This is another way to select your combo. You can decide what area you need support in and then choose accordingly.
Though I highly suggest documenting the properties for your collection in a way that’s searchable (it’s been so helpful for me in the usage), no worries if you haven’t had the chance (or inclination) to do that. If you don’t know the properties of your pieces, you can use the tags on this site to find different groupings that might work for you or you can search for them.
For example, you may be going into a situation you know may be stressful, so you select stones that are soothing, like Ventifacto and Pink Lithium Quartz (two Personal Favorites). This is a great way to find ones that will support your current need.
Intuitive Groupings
And finally, another way to group your stones is simply by your intuition. This is typically the method I use the most, but for those who aren’t accustomed to flowing in their intuition, this can sometimes feel daunting. It’s a great way to hone your skills because if you watch over time, you’ll likely find patterns emerging that will build your confidence and show you that you are tapped in.
Part of what makes this method unique is rather than my mind telling me what *I* want to work with, I’m letting the stones/crystals and my intuition tell me what will best support me. Too often we become so focused on our own agendas that we lose the bigger picture and may begin striving in a way that isn’t a blessing to the corporate body at large which also means it isn’t in our best benefit. It’s only when we operate from a place of yield strength (which requires humility) that we can truly step into the power we’ve been created for.
Essentially this method is simply allowing things to get “highlighted.” This could be me having something come to mind repeatedly, or having something catch my eye, or simply feeling a “yes” as I put my hand near it. Sometimes I end up with combinations that I would never have put together, but that are exactly perfect.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve drawn ones that perfectly support a situation that comes later in my day that I was completely taken off guard by. And how encouraged I was in those challenging moments knowing the Universe was supporting me and wasn’t surprised even if I was!
Identifying Meanings
Regardless of which method you use to select your combination of stones/crystals, I encourage you to not simply stop at the selection. Instead take a moment to consider the combined properties and determine what the combined meaning is for you. You might even write a short crystal affirmation that captures the meaning. I share more about my process for doing so in How-To Combine Crystal Properties. Hopefully you’ll find that helpful too!

[…] In How-To Combine Crystals, I talk about combining elements, and here we look at the implications of doing so from a metaphysical perspective. When combining Metaphysical Properties, I like to think of it as a multiplication rather than an addition. You don’t simply have the properties of two elements, you also have the resulting combination – just as you do in cooking where mixing multiple ingredients creates a new whole (like cake or bread instead of just flour, eggs, etc). […] In How-To Combine Crystals I share about combining stones/crystals and in How-To Combine Crystal Properties I get into determining combined meanings. In short, Crystal Grids are simply doing this on a larger scale so the elements are working over an extended period of time whether you’re in contact with them in the moment or not. […]
